
Getting Your UV Curing Right with Gallium Iodide
If you’re still relying on standard mercury lamps, you’ve probably noticed they have a bit of a blind spot. They’re fine for some things, but they don’t always play nice with the inks and coatings people are using these days. That’s where our Gallium Iodide lamps come in. We’ve tuned these to hit that 300nm to 400nm sweet spot. For a small or medium shop, this is a big deal. It means you can crank up your line speeds without having to rip out your entire curing tunnel and start from scratch. The problem with “skinning” Here’s the thing about mercury lamps: they struggle with thick ink. The short-wave UV hits the surface and just… stops. The top looks dry, but underneath? It’s still wet. You end up with that annoying “skinning” effect where the ink looks perfect until it just peels right off the substrate. Gallium iodide fixes this by shifting the light to longer wavelengths. It actually sinks deep into the ink film. You get a cure that goes all the way through to the bottom. No more peeling. Just a solid, permanent bond. Will it actually fit? Most of the time, yes. We build these to be drop-in replacements, so you aren’t spending your weekend re-engineering your setup. But—and this is a big but—check your ballasts first. Gallium lamps aren’t exactly “plug and play” with every power supply. They need different starting voltages and currents than mercury tubes. If your power supply isn’t up for it, you’ll either fry the filament or the arc just won’t strike. It’s a quick check that saves a lot of headache. A word on the heat There is a trade-off. These tubes run hot. If your cooling fans are choked with dust or your airflow is blocked, your lamp life is going to tank. Keep an eye on the housing temperature. You don’t want the quartz envelope stressing out because it’s overheating. Keep it cool, and the lamps will last. Made for the odd jobs We know most shops don’t just print one thing.
