
Getting UV Germicidal Lamps Right (Without Hurting Anyone)
Adding UV-C lamps to your printing or curing lines isn’t just a “plug and play” situation. You can’t just swap a bulb and call it a day. These lamps put out shortwave radiation—usually around 254nm—that shreds cells on contact. If your housing or shielding is off, you’re looking at injured operators or ruined materials. Not a great look. Keeping the light where it belongs Here’s the thing: UV-C is invisible. You can’t see it, but it’ll burn you just the same. We build our systems to make sure nothing leaks. That means sticking with aluminum or stainless steel boxes and using opaque gaskets. If you absolutely need a window to see what’s happening, don’t just grab some glass from the hardware store. Standard glass doesn’t stop UV-C. You’ll need tempered glass or polycarbonate with a specific cutoff wavelength. The ozone problem Some of these lamps run at 185nm, which turns oxygen into ozone. Now, ozone is great for killing germs, but it’s nasty for your lungs. You’ve got a choice here: go with ozone-free quartz tubes, or embrace the ozone. If you choose the latter, your ventilation has to be spot on. You need to suck that gas out of the building before it ever reaches your team on the shop floor. Plus, keep an eye on your electronics. High ozone levels will eat through your copper wiring and electrical contacts over time. Safety switches and fail-safes I always recommend hard-wiring a physical interlock switch to every single access panel. The second a door opens, the power should cut. Period. Don’t trust a software switch. Software glitches. Hard-wired switches don’t. It’s also a smart move to put in a UV-C sensor. These lamps fade over time. Once the intensity hits about 80%, it’s time to toss it and put in a fresh one. One last tip: higher wattage means faster kill rates, but it also means a lot of heat. You have to find the sweet spot between lamp density and your cooling fans. If the quartz envelope gets too hot, it’ll crack. And nobody wants to deal with that.
